The journal is a part of the shaft or axis (usually polished) that contacts the shaft and directly receives the load from the latter. The trunnion, which is placed at the end of the shaft (it is also called a spike), is loaded in the direction transverse to its axis, and in the axial direction the force is called the heel. The pivot, which rotates and is located in the middle part of the shaft, is often called the neck (the neck of the axle of the wheel pair). Unlike the neck of the shaft, the trunnion (spike) does not undergo axial torsion, but works only for bending, axial compression and shear.
